First Year at College

May 13th, 2009 · No Comments ·

The first year at college is a very stressful time for teenagers and their parents. Not only is they leaving home first, but also they leave their friends and the world they have lived in and were comfortable with for many years.
For many teenagers their first year takes in a new field, along with new people. College comes along with a learning setting, which is fast-paced and less personal than high school. It is an extreme shock to teenagers so they may find themselves fighting to comfort with and comprehend all the material that they are to learn. Quizzes and tests are longer and need knowledge of more information than high school, resulting in students’ stress levels to grow even more.
With nobody to guide them, often feshmen will find dangerous or unhealthy ways to unwind and take mind off of education. Though the dangers teenagers face in college have many common with high school, the rules, environment, and people that present these cases are different. Teenagers are in a place where they must make friends again, and since their parents, nor another adult is looking after them to tell them “No”, then they may make regretful and unsafe decisions.
Drinking is a primary threat to teenagers in college. Alcohol is simple to acquire and easier to consume. Various college parties exist near or on campus, with presence of alcohol and even drugs. With no adults near and security personnel seldom showing up, teenagers may feel invincible, thus pushing themselves to drinking and partying they cannot handle.
